On food porn

Leering lasciviously as I salivate over my computer screen, I am realising the importance of imagery to food blogs. Take FoodPornDaily, Abstract Gourmet and Ideas in Food as prime examples, and Skinny Gourmet for the concise explanation as well as the photos. I could just eat them up.

At first, I thought food blogging/writing was all about the words. Now, as I delve deeper into other people’s food imaginings and experiences, I find myself at least as affected by the photographic journal as I am by the written account. Beautiful food transcends you; it ushers you into another realm of sensory perception; it indulges, arouses, it excites. I guess that’s why they call it food porn.

Food porn. It is a kind of eye candy, but I wish there was another way to say it; I find the term degrading to the end product. Great food photos are like the elusive ‘Aha!’, so why not use something more edifying, like…um…well… Ok, so I can’t think of anything better. ‘Food erotica’ screams XXX, ‘food lust’ is not much better and ‘culinary art’ just doesn’t cut it.

The one thing of which I am certain is this: there is so much more to food than taste.

Totally agree with your analysis. But man I love those sites. Have you seen Tastespotting, Foodgawker and Photograzing?
